Free speech won big this session. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed 8 to 1, and here at home — with bipartisan support — Arizona made it a crime to block a church door or disrupt worship. But other good bills, like letting students step away for off-campus religious instruction with a parent’s written consent, cleared the Legislature only to stop at a single desk. In four years, more than 500 bills met that same veto pen — a record. In Arizona, that’s not the end of the story. This year, the whole statewide ballot turns over at once, so the people who decide whether these freedoms hold are all up for election together.
